The Atelier

An atelier is the studio or workshop of a professional artist where a handful of students would apprentice and learn technical mastery, through sound methodology and experience. Once, a standard for aspiring artists, this type of training reached it’s zenith in the 19th century before being largely forgotten. A new renaissance, which began around the start of the millennium to bring this training back from obscurity, is still growing today, and we are very proud to be a part of this continuing tradition.

Arthaus Atelier is an atelier style studio school whose principal instructors received their formal training in Florence, Italy. We are a husband and wife team who teach time-honored methods of representational drawing and painting, integrating classical realism with a contemporary aesthetic. Our aim is to make traditional techniques that were once widely taught in the European art academies accessible to all skill levels.

The atelier is a converted apple drying barn and is located just a few minutes north west of Sebastopol, in the beautiful west Sonoma County hills. Regular ongoing classes are offered September through June and run on a 12 week trimester system. Space is limited to allow for a high degree of individual attention.
